Commercial lawyer

A commercial lawyer provides legal advice to companies and governments on business-related issues. Commercial law is a branch of civil law or common law, and it deals with both private law and public law. The vast range of commercial law includes the Law of Contracts, Law of Agency, Company Law, Intellectual Property Law, and Banking and Finance, to name a few.

For example, in disputes arising in Banking and Finance, commercial lawyers adept in the law governing Banking and Finance will ensure that their clients are legally protected against the risks involved in a financing deal.

For disputes of the corporate nature, commercial lawyers must ensure that companies are in compliance with the law governing companies, mainly the Companies Act. The duty of a commercial or company lawyer is to ensure that the legal aspects of running a company and the transactions which a company undertakes, such as restructuring or an acquisition, is complaint with Singapore law.
